What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump is used to remove amassed water from a sump basin. In modern homes, this is typically found in the basement. This is where water runoff collects on your property. This commonly comes from storms and irrigation. Your sump pump keeps this basin clear and allows it to accept more water and prevent it from flooding your basement?

How Does it Work?

There are a few different types of sump pumps that use varying mechanisms, but here are the basics. Your pump will activate when water levels reach a high enough level and then clear the water from the basin. These use electricity, so they won’t function during a power outage, which is why you’ll need a backup!

Backup Sump Pumps

There are two types of sump pump backups that you can use—water-based and battery-powered. Your battery-operated one allows your system to work if the power is out using electricity stored in a battery. Water rises and triggers the battery to activate the pump. The only worry with this type of backup sump pump, is the need to monitor and occasionally replace the battery.

The other choice is a water-powered backup. These dial up the water pressure in the sump basin and clear it. These can use a lot of water and can impact your water bill, but you won’t ever have to worry about switching out batteries.
